New Delhi: The Asian Diving Championship is set to kick off in Guangzhou, China, starting October 21, with India being represented by accomplished diver Palak Sharma. Hailing from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Palak has shown immense dedication to diving since she was just 8 years old. Over the past nine years, she has made a name for herself by securing 50 medals at both national and international events. Her impressive record includes 4 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze at international competitions, alongside 29 gold, 8 silver, and 3 bronze at national championships.
Palak’s journey took off in 2018 when, at just 12 years old, she began competing in and winning medals at national junior events. Since then, she has continued to excel, demonstrating her incredible talent and determination.
Despite her young age, Palak has earned several prestigious honors, including the Prime Minister’s National Child Award in 2021 and the Eklavya Award from Madhya Pradesh in 2022. She is also the brand ambassador for the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign, a major initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Tragically, just five days before the tournament, Palak lost her grandfather. However, she has chosen to honor his memory by continuing to compete, demonstrating great strength and focus. In her words, “My grandfather was very dear to me, and my focus is now on winning a medal in his honor. Many suggested I skip the tournament, but I believe that if legends like Sachin Tendulkar can play for the country and score a century after losing a loved one, then so can I.”
Palak will depart for China on October 21 along with her team from Delhi, as shared by her public relations officer, Sanjay Bhushan Patiyala.
